AHI Commends U.S. Assessment of Cypriot Defense Capabilities
No. 12
WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. military is conducting an assessment of the defense capabilities of the Republic of Cyprus in order to provide “recommendations on infrastructure projects to enhance interoperability with the United States and other partners” according to Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis.
According to a source that spoke with Reuters, “Part of the assessment will look at the potential to upgrade landing facilities at the airbase to allow for large-scale evacuation operations from the region if needed.”
The American Hellenic Institute has long promoted U.S. defense cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus, as it is an ideal partner for promoting U.S. interests in the region, especially when involving security and defense. The Republic of Cyprus is strategically located between Europe, Africa, and Asia, and specifically has adjacent access to the Middle East, which makes it an ideal staging ground for U.S. military operations and humanitarian programs. Additionally, the U.S. and the Republic of Cyprus have already developed a history of working together through joint training exercises, a partnership with the New Jersey National Guard, and coordination involving the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The American Hellenic Institute is an independent non-profit U.S. public policy center and think tank that works to strengthen U.S. relations with Greece and the Republic of Cyprus, and promote issues important to the Greek American community.
