No. 73

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Herald published a July 20, 2024 article on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the invasion of the Republic of Cyprus titled, “Promoting Justice for Cyprus – In Washington DC, and across the U.S.” that included an interview with AHI President Nick Larigakis.

The interview provides perspective about President Larigakis’ initial involvement with the Cyprus issue as he recounted his first awareness of the tragedy occurred when he was 14 years old. He explained that, through his parents' activism for the cause of Cyprus in DC, and through his focus on the topic in college, he became more aware of the significance of what had occurred. He became fully immersed in the issue when he joined AHI in August 1987.

President Larigakis also describes how the “Cooperation between the U.S. and the Republic of Cyprus is at a historic high… Our bilateral partnership also continues to grow in other areas of common interest, such as promoting peace and security in the Eastern Mediterranean, diversifying European energy sources, fostering opportunities for greater trade and investment, and protecting cultural heritage. Official U.S. statements acknowledge “Cyprus’ geostrategic position and its participation in multilateral diplomatic initiatives such as the ‘3+1’ with Greece and Israel plus the U.S. on energy and economic issues, also make it an important partner in encouraging development and dialogue throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.”

Further, Larigakis noted the importance of the Strategic Dialogue the U.S. and the Republic of Cyprus recently agreed to.
