AHI President Nick Larigakis Interview Featured on CNN Greece Website
No. 89
WASHINGTON - An exclusive interview with Nick Larigakis, President of the American Hellenic Institute (AHI), conducted by journalist Georgia Garantziotis, was published on the CNN Greece website on October 9, 2024. In the interview titled “Ν. Λαρυγγάκης στο CNN Greece: Δεν θα έλεγα ότι ο Μπάιντεν έκανε ότι καλύτερο για Ελλάδα και Κύπρο,” Larigakis discusses U.S. foreign policy, US-Greece relations, and the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
Larigakis highlighted the strength of U.S.-Greece relations, noting they are currently at an all-time high. He also emphasized that U.S. policy decisions regarding the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey are predominantly shaped by the Department of State and Congress, and any changes in U.S. positions regarding these countries are relatively independent of the political party in power.
On the topic of U.S.-Turkey relations, Larigakis raised concerns regarding ongoing efforts to reintegrate Turkey into the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program. According to reports, attempts have been made to reach a compromise to address Turkey’s possession of the Russian S-400 missile defense system, the purchase of which resulted in Turkey being removed from the F-35 program after being sanctioned under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) due to the security threat the missile system poses to the U.S. and NATO.
AHI has advocated that the United States categorically reject any such deals due to Turkey’s history of using U.S. weapons in ways which violate U.S. law, their many actions that are contrary to U.S. regional interests, and their history of being unreliable and untrustworthy.
