The publication, with over 50 speeches given at five conferences sponsored by the AHI from 1988 to 1999, as well as submitted articles, contains the most comprehensive set of papers on the Cyprus problem. Several U.S. officials involved with the Cyprus problem are contributors, including Taylor G. Belcher, former U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus; Thomas D. Boyatt, State Department Cyprus Desk Officer in 1974; who opposed Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s policy on Cyprus; Charles W. McCaskill, former State Department Cyprus Desk officer; and former Congressmen John Brademas and Ed Derwinski, who led the successful effort in the U.S. House of Representatives in the fall of 1974 for the rule of law arms embargo on Turkey.

The volume details the responsibility of the U.S. for (1) the illegal coup ordered by the Greek dictator Brigadier General Dimitris Ioannides on July 15, 1974, and (2) Turkey’s illegal invasion of Cyprus on July 20, 1974 and the second phase of Turkey’s aggression on August 14-16, 1974, three weeks after the legitimate government of Cyprus had been restored. Twenty-nine years later, Turkey still illegally occupies 37.3 percent of Cyprus.

Also included in this volume are important statements from U.S. Representatives Robert Andrews, Michael Bilirakis, Benjamin Gilman, Carolyn Maloney, Robert Menendez, Frank Pallone, Jr., Donald Payne, Brad Sherman, and Olympia Snowe (now U.S. Senator Snowe), and from U.S. Senators Joe Biden, Larry Pressler, Paul Sarbanes and Gordon Smith.

The book also includes a moving speech by Kathryn Cameron Porter, an article by the distinguished author and journalist Christopher Hitchens, an acute analysis by Ted Galen Carpenter (Vice President for Defense and Foreign Policy Studies, The Cato Institute), and an incisive article on “Cyprus and the EU: The Road to Accession and Beyond,” by Andreas Theophanous.
