No. 16

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On February 28, 2025, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with his counterpart, Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis, to discuss current affairs and the importance of the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

“In our letter to Secretary Rubio last week, we urged him to continue his trend of supporting cooperation with countries in the Eastern Mediterranean that have a record of promoting U.S. interests, such as Greece,” said AHI president Nick Larigakis. “Meeting with Foreign Minister Gerapetritis within the first 100 days of the new administration speaks to his commitment to further strengthen this relationship, and I applaud him for this.”

According to the readout of the meeting, Secretary Rubio “reaffirmed the strategic importance of the U.S.-Greece partnership.” The readout also stated that “The United States applauds Greece’s strong commitment to defense spending and the Secretary welcomed Greece’s presence on the UN Security Council for its 2025-2026 term.” It further highlighted that “The Secretary and Foreign Minister Gerapetritis also discussed Greece’s leadership in regional energy projects and prospects for future cooperation.”

The Department of State issued the following statement on the bilateral relationship between the United States and Greece on January 20, 2025: “Greece is a close partner and key NATO Ally with which the United States shares a deep and abiding security partnership. Its commitment to the Alliance and location at the crossroads of the Western Balkans, North Africa, the Middle East, and NATO’s southeastern flank makes Greece a particularly important strategic ally.”
