No. 100

WASHINGTON, DC - In the 2024 House of Representatives election, two new Greek Americans won seats and will be heading to Washington for the 119th Congress. The American Hellenic Institute congratulates Representative-elect Maggie Goodlander (D-NH) and Representative-elect Mike Haridopolos (R-FL) and looks forward to the expansion of Greek American representation in the nation’s legislative body.

Maggie Goodlander began her career working as a foreign policy advisor in the United States Senate where she helped write landmark sanctions legislation. She went on to serve as an intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve for over a decade. After graduating from law school and serving as a law clerk on the United States Supreme Court, Maggie taught constitutional law at UNH and Dartmouth. She also served on the boards of the NH Women’s Foundation, NH Legal Assistance, the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire, and the Rudman Center Advisory Board. Maggie later served as counsel in the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump. After President Biden was elected, Maggie went to the U.S. Department of Justice as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General. Most recently, Maggie served as senior advisor at the White House where she led President Biden’s Unity Agenda for the Nation, dedicated to solving five big challenges: beating the opioid epidemic, tackling the mental health crisis, holding Big Tech accountable, meeting our sacred obligation to veterans, and ending cancer as we know it.

Mike Haridopolos began his career teaching United States History and Political Science at Brevard Community College—now Eastern Florida State College. Haridopolos also taught classes as an instructor at the Bob Graham Center at the University of Florida. He was then elected to the Florida House of Representatives where he served for three years before being elected to the Florida State Senate. He would go on to be elected to the Senate’s presidency, where hold the position until 2012. In office, Haridopolos focused on balancing the state’s budget, passing tax relief, reforming the state’s pension, welfare and Medicaid systems, along with other initiatives. Haridopolos also formed the Florida Innocence Commission, to review cases where Floridians were possibly falsely imprisoned. After leaving office, Haridopolos started MJH Consulting, a successful business and political consulting company. He appeared regularly on Fox 35 Orlando offering political analysis and remains active in federal, state, and local politics.
