AHI Marks the 109th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

No. 46

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) has issued the following statement on April 24, 2024:

Today, we join with the Armenian community to commemorate the 109th anniversary of the start of the Armenian Genocide, a crime against humanity. We remember the 1.5 million Armenians who were systematically and deliberately annihilated by Ottoman Turkey.

The historical record on the Armenian Genocide the broader genocidal campaign perpetrated by Ottoman Turkey against Christian minorities of the Ottoman Empire is well documented.

The continued effort by present-day Turkey to deny these genocides is an affront to fundamental human rights and only serves as an obstacle to regional stability and greater regional cooperation.

In addition, Turkey has been aiding and abetting Azerbaijan’s current aggression towards Armenia. Azerbaijan used Turkish supplied equipment and F-16 fighter jets against Armenia in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. 100 years after the Armenian genocide, Turkey wants to foment another ethnic cleansing of the Armenian people.

According to AHI President Larigakis “Turkey’s role in destabilizing the Caucasus, including through the transfer of F-16’s to Azerbaijan for offensive purposes, is totally unacceptable, and another reason why Turkey should not have received upgraded F-16’s from the Biden Administration. 100 years after the Armenian genocide, not only does Turkey not acknowledge its history, but it is aiming to push for another ethnic cleansing of the Armenian people by arming and abetting Azerbaijan, which recently pushed out the Armenian population out of Nagorno-Karabakh through force.”

The American Hellenic Institute is an independent non-profit Greek American public policy center and think tank that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
