ATHENS - American Hellenic Institute President Nick Larigakis met with General Dimitrios Choupis, Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, during his visit to Greece.

General Chopis and president Larigakis discussed issues involving U.S. interests in the Eastern Mediterranean and recent developments in the region. included in the discussion was the topic of the 3+1 multilateral cooperation structure between Greece, the Republic of Cyprus, Israel, and the United States. Larigakis highlighted to General Chopis the importance of strengthening this structure and briefed him on legislation in the Untied States Congress initiated by AHI to accomplish this. This legislation, H.R. 2510: The American-Hellenic-Israeli Eastern Mediterranean Counterterrorism and Maritime Security Partnership Act of 2025, was introduced on Monday, March 31, 2025, by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) and is co-led by Rep. Thomas H. Kean Jr. (R-NJ), Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY), and Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ). If passed, it would be the third piece of legislation enacted into law to support the “3+1” partnership between Greece, the Republic of Cyprus, Israel, and the United States.

“I sincerely thank General Choupis for his time and for the discussion on important geostrategic issues related to U.S. interests in the Eastern Mediterranean,” Larigakis said. “It was especially important to talk about the benefits that the American-Hellenic-Israeli Security Act would create for the 3+1 structure if passed. Cooperation between the United States, Greece, the Republic of Cyprus, and Israel, is integral to maintain stability and security in the region.”
