AHI Urges Secretary Rubio to Build on Recent Statement and Reaffirm Greece’s Rights Under International Law

No. 67

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) sent Secretary of State Marco Rubio a letter dated October 26, 2026. The letter welcomes the State Department’s October 25 statement that eastern Libya’s ratification of the 2019 Turkey-Libya maritime memorandum is “unhelpful and provocative.” It urges the Department to publicly reaffirm that the memorandum cannot prejudice Greece’s rights under international law, and that islands, including Crete and the Dodecanese, are entitled to maritime zones.

“A consistent U.S. position would reduce uncertainty, reinforce respect for the rights of its allies, and protect the commercial and security interests essential to a stable Eastern Mediterranean,” AHI President Nick Larigakis wrote.
