AHI Applauds Congressional Initiative to Block F-16 Sale
No. 14
Washington, DC — On February 5, 2024, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) filed S.J.Res.60: “a joint resolution providing for congressional disapproval of the proposed foreign military sale to the Government of Turkiye of certain defense articles and services.”
During the 15-day period the Administration notifies Congress regarding an arms sale, Congress may enact a joint resolution to prohibit the proposed transaction. The President can veto a resolution of disapproval, subject to congressional override by two-thirds majorities of both houses. To date, Congress has not successfully blocked any proposed arms sales via joint resolutions of disapproval, though there have been instances where congressional opposition has led the executive branch to withdraw or alter sales.
According to AHI President Nick Larigakis “We greatly appreciate Senator Paul’s initiative, and support for the rule of law. Turkey is an unreliable ally of the United States and NATO, and actively undermines U.S. interests. From Turkey’s close ties to Russia and Iran, to its efforts to destabilize the Eastern Mediterranean, to its continued to support for Hamas, as well as its ongoing occupation of Cyprus, Turkey has been destabilizing force in the region. Turkey should not receive F-16 fighter jets from the United States.”
