AHI Congratulates Greece on Election to UN Security Council for 2025-26

No. 62

WASHINGTON, DC - The American Hellenic Institute congratulates Greece on being elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Greece will hold this role for the 2025-2026 term.

182 countries supported Greece’s bid, speaking strongly to Greece’s international significance and reputational strength. Greece was last elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2005-2006 term.

Greece is one of the founding members of the United Nations and has contributed to its mission since 1945. Since then, Greece has had an active role in promoting the international rules-based order followed by the U.N. This includes adherence to the rule of law, promotion of international economic cooperation, and support for humanitarian objectives.

AHI President Nick Larigakis stated, “This milestone achievement speaks to the great lengths Greece has taken to become one of the predominant forces of stability, democracy, and security in its region. From its top-level contributions to NATO to its emerging leadership role in the European Union, Greece is establishing itself as one of the most important countries in international affairs of the 21st century.

“Its geostrategic importance, history of cooperation with the United States, and strong support of its allies, makes Greece an ideal country to work on security issues in the United Nations. We look forward to seeing the results that Greece’s leadership will bring.”

The American Hellenic Institute is an independent non-profit Greek American public policy center and think tank that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
